Description:
Development of Well Head Protection Plan North Carolina 2008
Analytical Services, Inc. (ASI) personnel are providing assistance to a County Government in Western North Carolina to develop a well head protection plan (WHPP) for a newly developed well field. The WHPP required the delineation of the groundwater “source area” for each of the nine (9) wells that will be used in the public supply system. Data generated from two aquifer pump testing events, including pumping rates and apparent connectivity with other monitoring wells, was utilized to define the source areas for each well using the variable shape method.
In addition to defining the source area for the groundwater supply wells an inventory of potential contaminant threats will be made. Currently this project is in progress. The completed WHPP project will include recommendations for management of the groundwater supply wells and their respective source areas. The WHHP is designed to encourage protection of the groundwater resources contributing to the well field. To encourage stakeholder participation a committee will be assembled to provide input on the management of the wells and to encourage education within the community regarding best management practices that are crucial toward the long term sustainability of groundwater resources.
