Description: Groundwater Monitoring Plan, Municipal Water System – Loudoun County, Virginia 2008
Analytical Services, Inc. (ASI) personnel provided assistance to a municipal water system that was required to develop and implement a groundwater monitoring program prior to bringing a new supply well online. The new public water supply well was installed along the boundary of the public supply service area where residential homes continue to receive their water from private groundwater wells. Loudoun County required that a groundwater monitoring plan be prepared for their review and approval prior to approving the use of the new public supply well.
A hydrogeologic assessment of the property was conducted in order to determine the recommended scope of the monitoring program. Fracture trace analysis was performed and a review of local well logs and geologic mapping was made. The final plan recommended long term monitoring of water levels within thirteen (13) active water supply wells via the use of in-situ dataloggers. The monitoring plan also included limited groundwater quality testing. The plan required monitoring both prior to and during the active operation of the new public supply well.
The groundwater monitoring program will continue for two (2) years at which time the data will be evaluated and recommendations will be made to continue the monitoring program, make changes to the monitoring protocol, or discontinue monitoring activity.
The Groundwater Monitoring Plan was reviewed and approved by both Loudoun County Staff and the Virginia Office of Water Programs. A permit for the active use of the new supply well was successfully obtained.
